HOTELS
San Francisco Hotel Postcards
San Francisco hotels started issuing postcards as early as 1936 to lure of out-of-town visitors to see the Treasure Island fair. The fair buildings were not yet completed at the time of these cards' issuance. As a result, the images of the fair were often inaccurate. Other inaccuracies were quite intentional, such as the exaggerated image of the Palace Hotel looming large over the San Francisco horizon. Both the Fairmont Hotel and the Hotel Mark Hopkins changed the geographical location of the fair, depicting the San Francisco Bay to the south, so that Treasure Island could be seen in the background of the hotels.
