THE ELEPHANT TRAINS

Elephant Train and Federal Building Across
Lakes of the Nations
The Elephant Trains were actually motorized trams, with the engine of the automobile fashioned to resemble an elephant's head. A trip from the parking lot to the center of Treasure Island was ten cents; a tour of the entire island, with a lecturer commenting through a megaphone, cost thirty-five cents.

World's Fair on Treasure Island
Black lights and fluorescent lights reflected on the luminescent paint of the structures, fountains were illuminated by underwater colored lights, and search lights formed an overhead scintillator of color.

The Colonnade of the Federal Building, seen in the background, was composed of 48 columns to represent the 48 states: Alaska and Hawaii had not yet been admitted to the Union. The building, designed by Timothy Pflueger, held two murals depicting the history of the Western states.
