GUIDEBOOK

Cover of Golden Gate International Exposition Guidebook 1940
Simon Vanderlaan's painting of the head of the 80-foot statue of Pacifica, created by Ralph Stackpole, graced the cover of both the 1939 and this 1940 version of the Official Guidebook to the Golden Gate International Exposition.

The guidebook consisted of over 100 pages, with finger tabs for quick reference, followed by more detailed descriptions of the Treasure Island exhibits. Information included transportation to the fairgrounds, general services, eateries, exhibits, gardens, and outdoor art. Inside the cover, a foldout map (image below) designed by cartographer Ruth Taylor showed an overview of Treasure Island, with enlarged maps of the exhibit groups on the reverse.

"CaricaTour" Map of the Golden Gate International Exposition on Treasure Island 1939 - 1940

Ruth Taylor-White (1891 - 1950)
Cartoonist and Commercial Artist

Born in Texas and a resident of San Francisco from 1928 to 1930, Taylor had a successful career creating caricature maps of states and parks. She designed this rare "CaricaTour" postcard of Treasure Island as well as the foldout map (image below) for the official guidebook of the Golden Gate International Exposition. Oversized caricatures on the map were used to illustrate the island's attractions on a basic map of the fairgrounds.
